China vol. 11 "Everything Else"

Okay, here are what I think are the rest of my China pics.

This is the view out one side of Brian's parents' apartment. Across the bay you can see Hong Kong.

This is for my Dad...Mission Hills Golf Course...216 holes, 12 different golf courses, each designed by a different Pro Golfer. The world's largest golf course.

This is the view of Hong Kong as we were leaving on the ferry.

Do you recognize the tallest building on the left? I've been told it's the building in Batman.

More views of Hong Kong at night.

Outside a restaurant in Hong Kong.

At the zoo we went to. Yes, that is a toddler peeing in the middle of the zoo, in the area by the shark tank we had pictures of earlier. I did not zoom in.

Me getting a foot massage. The Chinese are so freakishly strong! After this guy I thought I'd try a back massage, because after sitting like this for a total of 90 minutes your back really starts to tense up and I found it difficult to relax, and then when they come at the end to massage your lower back it really, really, really hurt. So, I tried a back massage so I could lay down. The day after my back massage, my back was so sore it felt like I had a sunburn. I am not kidding, or exaggerating-my back and shoulders were so tender it hurt to put the diaper bag over my shoulder. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning until I really know how to communicate that I would like a soft, relaxing massage. Even though Steve & Carrie taught me how to say "painful", it was not enough.

This lady was in the lobby of the massage salon. I have no idea what kind of instrument she is playing, but it sounded pretty!

The outside of the massage place.

And that's all! I think I have some more pictures of the zoo/animal cruelty show, but I need to figure out which ones I already posted.

And yes, in case you were wondering, we are pretty much back in our routine. Jayden has slept through the night two nights in a row since we've been back so we are keeping our fingers crossed!

China vol. 10 "Bucci, Noodles & Luohu"

Bucci is an outdoor art gallery, with all kinds of different artist's shops that go for blocks and blocks. We didn't buy anything, but it was fascinating to look around. Some of those artists were phenomenal! Some of the wives take family photos there and have an artist paint the photo, and I saw some of the finished products, and it was absolutely amazing. They truly look almost exactly like a photograph. I also heard that some women in the branch have had the paintings of Christ holding children 'copied' with their children's faces inserted. That's definitely on my list of things to get when Jayden is a little older/we have more kids.
Yes, that is a painting of a naked lady that I blurred out.

We ate at this noodle place that was like $2 a person, and it was really quite tasty!
You know you're dining in luxury when your napkins turn out to really be a toilet paper roll disguised in this super fancy plastic container!

Luohu is a shopping center that's basically a 6 or so story mall that's full of little swap meet type stores that sell all kinds of things. It's quite overwhelming at first, because a lot of the stores sell the same types of things, and it's all negotiating. I had a specific list of things, probably only went to 7 different stores, went with two hard core shoppers who knew what they were doing, and we were still there for over 5 hours! It was a LONG day, and was exhausting. But I did get some good bargains!

This is a jewelry store, and yes, those are pearls covering the walls and in those bags on the floor. And yes, they are real. You pick out the pearls you want, tell or show them a picture of what you want, how long of a strand, style, etc., and they make it for you right there. I'd post pictures of what I bought, but with Mother's Day, birthdays and whatnot coming up, I can't.

This is just one section of the jewelry floor.

This is one of the hallways. That's Monica in the brown shirt. She's from Spain. She's one of the pilot's wives; her husband Doug has been with the company ever since I've known Brian. She is a lot of fun-a hard core shopper and negotiator. She got me a Coach purse for $20! Of course, as I was looking at the purses (you pick a few out of a catalog that you'd like to look at, and then they go get them, and you go behind the counter to decide which one you want) the police came by and all the shopkeepers were amazingly fast at hiding certain things. I guess the police come looking for certain things at different times; this time it was Louis Vuitton.

Carrie also has a favorite DVD shop. It's in a mall like this one, but you go down a deserted hallway to a door that looks like a door to a grungy closet or something. Anyway, you knock, and they let you in to a Blockbuster store of DVDs and series sets that cost about $1 a disk. It's one of those places that you'd never know it was there unless someone shows you. There are tons of DVD stores, and people even sell DVDs from their bikes on the street, but apparently this place has really good quality.

Now that I'm going into such detail about the shady dealings in China, I'm grateful my Laurels don't read my blog...

Oh well...going on...some of the Chinese are more aggressive than others. They'd call out to you as you walked by, saying "What you looking for?" "What you need?" "I have what you need!", and my favorite, "Missy! Missy! Come see!" It was like walking the strip in Vegas-look straight ahead, don't make eye contact, and keep your hands to yourself.
Some of them would follow us onto the escalators asking us what we were looking for and what they could help us find. Carrie's response was that she was looking for her husband.

Here's a pic of the swarm of Chinese women watching Carrie feed Jayden. One thing I definitely noticed about the Chinese culture is that there are no boundaries when it comes to a blonde American baby boy. So many people came up to us, scolding me for not dressing him warm enough (they bundle their babies in snowsuits, it's a wonder the babies don't get dehydrated in that humid weather) and wanting to hold him. Even though I understood them, not speaking the language made it easier for me to ignore them and say no. Jayden liked all the attention, he's such a flirt, but I got tired of it.

I couldn't pass up this photo of Moni trying on this dress. Nice look!
Yay for shopping in China!

China vol. 9 "Teething, Flight, & More Jet Lag"

So, I have realized that recovering from jet lag is 1,000 times worse when you have a teething baby to take care of at the same time!

He had one tooth before we left for China, and got his second bottom tooth while there. He was grumpy for two or three days, and only really had one bad night with each of those two teeth. Not too bad, from what I've heard. The morning we left to fly home, he had three teeth on the top that were really swollen and white and looked like they could pop through at any second. Right now I feel like these three teeth could be the death of me!

I thought that the flight would be reasonably okay, since we had the bulkhead seats with a hanging bassinet. Unfortunately, the bassinet is pretty small, and I think Jayden had trouble sleeping b/c he couldn't really move at all. Also, I didn't know that when you use the airplane bassinet, every time the pilot turns the seatbelt sign on, you have to take the baby out and hold him. Super obnoxious!!! So, between the small bassinet, his teething irritability, and the stupid seatbelt sign, Brian and I got about 30 minutes of sleep during the entire trip: the ferry ride to Hong Kong, the 12 hour flight from Hong Kong to San Fran, our three hour layover, and then our flight from San Fran to Vegas.

Poor Jayden is so fussy and is crankier than he has ever been-even as a newborn. He clings on me all day, wants to nurse all the time, and won't let us put him down, especially for bed. We've been home for two nights now, and total he has probably spent 20 minutes in his crib, and an hour and a half in his swing. Can you guess where he has been the rest of the time???!!! He's never like this, so I know he must truly be in pain.

One of the three top teeth has come through, but just barely. Pray that the other two come down quickly! Last night I took him for a drive at 3 am, and that seemed to work. So we'll try that tonight and see how it goes.

Here's another picture of Jayden under the effects of jet lag! After playing at the park yesterday with Sarah & Heidi, we went to Target. I figured it would be a surefire thing to keep him awake a little bit longer. Boy, was I wrong!
Who knew a shopping cart was so comfortable? I pushed him around like this for quite a while. He finally woke up when I took him out of the cart to get back in the car.

Wish us luck tonight!

China vol. 8 "Randomness"

China vol. 7 "Feeding the Tigers"

What do you get when you take some raw meat, get on a caged bus, and add some hungry tigers and lions?

For 7 dollars per person, these pictures!

Napoleon Dynamite's favorite animal...

...Ligers really do exist!

I'd also like to clarify that I am not zooming in!

We could hear the bones crunch in this first video! It was truly an experience!

Then they put a chicken through the roof and waited for the tiger to jump on top of the bus to get it...

Next time we'll feed the baby tigers a bottle...only 5 dollars...

China vol. 6 "The Zoo"

At the Bird Show...

If you held up Chinese money the bird would come and land on your hand and then take the money back to the trainer.

Brian and I got in these gerbil cage things to run around and try to bump into each other. It was fun for the first minute or so and then it got sweltering hot, and on an especially humid day, that got old real quick.

This is how they clean the tanks!

Here are pics of the show we went to see. It was more of a circus than a zoo, though. I couldn't believe the things they made the animals do! Those poor animals!

At first I thought that might be a person inside a bear costume, but I assure you, that's a real bear!

I'll let these videos speak for themselves...
